Makerere University has lifted a suspension imposed on Deus Muhwezi Kamunyu.
This follows consent judgment before Kampala High Court Justice Lydia Mugambe between the institution and Kamunyu, the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (Muasa) chairman.
Kamunyu sued Makerere University and Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe in January, seeking to quash his suspension for allegedly lacking discipline.
In his suit, Kamunyu, said Nawangwe, the university’s vice chancellor had suspended him in his letter dated January 17, 2019, without giving him notice in writing including grounds for removal from office/employment, among others.
Other matters agreed upon in the consent judgment witnessed by lawyers Hudson Musoke and Felix Ampaire, Kamunyu is required to submit to the internal disciplinary process before appointments board of the university.
According to a statement signed by Muhammad Kiggundu Musoke, the Mak’s manager, Communications and International relations, the university also assured all staff and stakeholders ‘that the handling of any disciplinary matters shall adhere to the principles of natural justice, fairness and equity.’
Also agreed upon is that the settlement was in full and final settlement before court in January. Each party shall bear its own cost.
