Police in Amolatar town has blocked officials from Forum for Democratic Change from opening up a branch office in Amolator district. Police say they weren’t informed in time.
Last month, police blocked Democratic Party (DP) from holding their DP reunion meeting which was to take place at Jinja Rugby Grounds.
According to DP president, Norbert Mao police had been notified about the meeting which was scheduled to take place, however, this didn’t stop police from blocking them to the extent that even the leader Mao was arrested.
In some way, on Saturday as the FDC leaders led by their president Patrick Oboi Amuriat and the leader of women’s league Ingrid Turinawe wanted to have their office launched but police intercepted them and asked them to back off.
“It is extremely disappointing that the DPC, Mr Abedi come and accosted me. questioning my presence in Amolator town as if am not a free citizen of this country,” Amuriat said.
According to Kevin Taaka an FDC member, police officers threatened to shoot at them if they don’t back away from the area.
“We came to open an office in Amolator. Simply put, this is our home. How can police deny us to be in our home?” Said Taaka.
Police kept on deploying more armed police officers were those who didn’t have guns had big sticks. As the tension increased FDC youth dragged off Amuriat to the new office which he opened on tension and after police ordered him to get out of the town.
According to Turinawe who is also the FDC Secretary for Mobilisation, they had not only come to open up and office but they had also come to give help to the pregnant women and students through giving them mama kits and sanitary pads.
“We came here simply to mark the women’s day in our own way,” said Turinawe
Last year political parties under the Inter party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) held a summit at Speke Resort Hotel Munyonyo and one of the resolutions the ruling party leader President Museveni promised to the opposition parties was the provision of favourable political environment to all political players in Uganda. However, according to Mao the resolutions seem to have been a waste of time because ever since the IPOD summit of 2018, opposition is still facing hardships with security forces who have always acted in partisan emotions.
