Veterinary authorities in Ntungamo have launched a massive vaccination and sensitisation of cattle farmers of animals to contain the outbreak of lumpy skin (Ekifuruuto) and anthrax (Kooto) diseases in the district.
This follows the on and off outbreak deadly lumpy skin and anthrax diseases in Nyabihoko, Ihunga, Kibatsi, Bwongyera, Itojo, Nyakyera, Rugarama, Rubaare and Ntungamo sub counties where by over 20 cattle’s have already died from the diseases.
Speaking to veterinarians on Tuesday during urgent stakeholder meeting in the district council hall, the Ntungamo District Veterinary officer, Dr Yake Basulira revealed that diseases are common in the areas of Kajara and Rushenyi counties neighboring Rukungiri District where the diseases are common.
Dr Basulira is calling upon all cattle keepers to embrace the mass animal vaccination where each animal will be vaccinated at Shs2,000 or they risk of putting a quarantine on animal products in the district.
He also tasks government to subsidies the vaccination drugs to ease farmers to buy them at a lowest cost.
