The Kabale District woman Member of Parliament, Catherine Ndamira Atwakiire, has called on women in the district to start piggery and vegetable patches, in order to be self-reliant economically.
Atwakiire made the call on Saturday, while handing over 68 piglets to 34 women groups in local villages in Katookye and Kyanamira parishes of Kyanamira Sub County in Kabale district.
The piglets are part of the legislator’s project targeting women in the district that the legislator launched last year, with their aim of fighting household poverty. The handover was held at Kabira Primary School and Kyanamira sub county headquarters respectively. Hon Atwakiire observed that projects like piggery and vegetables patches help to empower the women to be self-reliant, instead of waiting for what their husbands will bring home.
100 Goats to Muslim communities
Mp Ndamiira in December last year gave out 100 goats to the Muslim communities in the district as a move of fighting household poverty in Kabale.
According to Ndamira, the distributed animals multiply in a short period of time and thus could be a remedy for household poverty.
Over the last two years, Ndamira has distributed six tons of maize in Kabale, four tons of rice, 100 goats and 2,400 piglets.
