Makerere University staff have once again resolved to continue with the strike until their demands are met.
In a joint emergency general assembly held on Monday at the University Main Hall, staff under Makerere University Academic Staff Association (Muasa), Makerere University Administrative Staff Association (Masa) and National Union of Educational Institutions (NUEI) observed that the demand for lifting of the suspension of their leaders has not been dealt with in substance as there was only a statement by Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe that he was willing to start a new chapter of mutual respect and take the university to greater heights.
According to the joint staff associations, they will continue with the strike until the issue of suspended leaders is resolved.
“In any case not later than Thursday 14 February, 2019,” staff associations warned in a letter dated 11 February, 2019.
“Some members of Association and the Union were nominated to work with the joint executives of the Associations and the Union. It is agreed that every staff member of the staff Associations and Union are all on strike. The only personnel managing essential services are allowed to work and these are security and the University Hospital.”
The University staff went on strike at the start of the semester following the suspension of Dues Kamunyu Muhwezi (Muasa Chairperson), Bennet Magara (Masa Chairman) and Joseph Kalema (Masa General Secretary) for alleged misconduct.
