Juma Waswa Balunywa, the Principal of Makerere University Business School, has succumbed to pressure from the public and a petition to the National Council for High Education (NCHE) to admit that Quiin Abenakyo should not have graduated.
Prof. Balunywa added that Abenakyo, the reigning Miss World- Africa did not qualify for a degree because she had failed her Financial Management paper, and did not have time to retake it since she was running for Miss Uganda.
Last month Abenakyo was among several graduands who were awarded a Bachelors Degree in Business Computing.
Her degree has however been termed ‘fake’ by hawk eyed critics who had not seen Abenekyo’s name in the graduation booklet.
This forced David Musiri, a second-year student at Makerere University to petition NCHE and Makerere University, calling for the cancellation of Abenakyo’s degree, claiming that it’s unfair that a person can attain a degree because of fame.
But her lecturers were quick to say she did not appear in the booklet because she had not yet completed the necessary requirements at the time when they were printed.
While appearing on a nbs, a local TV on Wednesday, Prof. Balunywa confessed that since Abenakyo had made the country proud after being crowned Miss World Africa. MUBS therefore awarded her with the degree to avoid distress and negative criticisms from the public.
“She made the country proud, it was worthwhile that she also be supported to complete her degree,” said Prof. Balunywa.
