The military has announced that the local defense units are about to take up their posts in Kampala and its sorrounding.
Army spokesman Brig Richard Karemire says LDUs have finished their training and were ready to be rolled out.
“LDUs are ready to take up their posts in Kampala metropolitan. They have completed their training.” He said.
LDUs started training last year after President Museveni proposed that they were a stop gap measure to fight the increasing crime in metropolitan Kampala.
Museveni made the resolution after the assassination of Buyende district Commander Mohammed Kirumira and a number of other Ugandans especially in the areas of Entebbe and Nansana.
Macknovis Odongo, a resident of Katabi in Entebbe, believes LDUs would add another security layer which would bring about safety and security in their locality where many women were killed last year.
Deborah Kirungi, lc1 Katabi says “we look forward to working with LDUs. They’ll improve our security”.
LDUs recruits were promised sh200,000 per month.
