Makerere university management has slammed sacked staff for their decision to petition parliament, an act the Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe described as an act of indiscipline.
Addressing journalist on Thursday, Prof. Nawangwe said its wrong for the university staff to disturb the speaker of parliament with issues the university can address hence asking the them to follow the right procedures if they are not contented with the decisions of the management.
‘’The staff who petitioned Parliament should have first read the university regulations that govern them. it was not right for the staff to run to parliament because they were supposed to first petition their staff tribunal which was established by the University Council instead of running to the Speaker of Parliament who is ever busy,’’ said Prof. Barnabas Nawange.
According to the Vice Chancellor, on December 22, 2018, the institution sacked 45 staff on grounds of indiscipline, assault to mention but a few with the contracts of other staff like Dr Stella Nyanzi expiring without being renewed.
“She (Nyanzi) had been contracted for five years and the contract expired. She never requested for a renewal but she kept around the university and now a decision was taken to make it known to her that she was no longer part of the university,” Nawangwe revealed.
He further warned members of how he will not be black mailed by anyone by calling him a dictator since he is following the right procedures.
