Uganda Cup official sponsors Stanbic Bank have increased the prize money for the winner of the competition plus other tournament prize monies.
The bank has confirmed that this year’s total package will go up to a tune of Shs120 million from the initial Shs90 million that was competed for in last year’s edition.
The announcement was made by the bank’s marketing manager Sonia Karamagi during draws for the round of 64 on Monday. The winner of this year will receive Shs40 million prize money, the runners up Shs20 million, the semifinalists Shs10 million each, the quarter finalists Shs5 million each while those who will reach the round of 16 will walk away with Shs2.5 million each.
Ms Karamagi also noted that the bank is looking at and committed to supporting and driving growth in the communities in which they operate and hence the support.
“Sports around the world over is not just a recreational activity, it contributes to economic development through job creation, skills development, infrastructural investment and business growth. This is why Stanbic is partnering with FUFA to grow football through the Stanbic UgaCup and we look forward for an exciting and competitive season.”
FUFA president Eng.Moses Magogo also echoed the benefits the continued support from Stanbic Bank brings to Ugandan football.
“We are excited to continue our partnership with Stanbic Bank in growing football across the country. The Stanbic Uganda Cup is the biggest sports competition in the country involving over 175 teams and 3,150 players from the first division to the fifth division as well as non-league teams. The competition has been played since 1971 with the winner representing Uganda in the CAF Confederations Cup.
There will be no tie between the top flight teams in the round of 64 as they all were drawn against lower league opposition.
KCCA FC are the defending champions of the competition after defeating Vipers SC 1-0 in a final which was held in Bukedea.
