Forum for Democratic change (FDC) Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi has asked all party members to stop wearing red as their politicking colour.
Nandala made the request during FDC’s national council meeting on Thursday at the party headquarters in Najanankumbi. According to Nandala, the colour red which is now used by all FDC members has made members forget the basics and the original core values of the party.
“Red is not our party colour. I have seen several members not dressed in our colour, which is blue while doing party’s assignments. But rather using the ‘people power’ colour. Our blue colour represents a lot and speaks what we are,” said Nandala.
Red emerged as a uniting colour for all opposition politicians in September last year. This was during the period of the amendment of Article 120 (b). The colour was first sighted in Parliament when legislators wore red ribbons and screaming ‘Togikwatako’.
It was later popularized by Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, who joined Parliament in July, 2017.
Although FDC is the largest opposition party, Nandala has requested both party supporters and members to use party’s original colour blue and leave red for others.
“We shall not allow any more red outfits as FDC. Let us go back to blue because red is suffocating us,” said Nandala.
However, Sarah Eperu, the FDC’s Women’s League spokesperson told Nandala that red is a uniting colour.
“I will still wear red colour because this is the only weapon we have that unites us,” Eperu said.
Nandala’s argument comes after Uganda Peoples’ Congress (UPC) threatened to sue Bobi Wine and ‘People Power’ for using the colour red.
