Men in Kabale District have been urged to embrace family planning. This after it was discovered that many men have shunned the process and instead left women it up to the women.
Also, it was discovered that most of the men in the district prefer to use condoms as opposed to other family planning methods such as vasectomy. The revelation was made by Christine Mandella, the Kabale District Health Officer, on Thursday.
She was speaking to Watchdog Uganda after an evaluation meeting between Kabale Women in Development (KWID) and Amref Health Africa Uganda in Kabale municipality.
She was echoed by Florence Tumuheirwe, the executive director of KWID, who called upon men to visit nearest health centers with their wives to learn about the other family planning methods.
“I call upon men to visit heath centers together with their wives to know more about family planning. It benefits a lot in future,” she reiterated.
Earlier this year, the permanent secretary ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Dorcas Okalany warned that Uganda’s population would hit 55 million going by the current fertility and population growth rates.
This, she said would only worsen country’s socio-economic problems.
And although men have slowly embraced condom usage and family planning as a whole, Swizen Ndyabaho, the senior labour officer at Kabale district local government, they need more and clear information about it.
