The incoming Uganda Sports Press Association president, Patrick Kanyomozi has thanked sports scribes for entrusting him with their votes.
In his first major communication as Uspa head, the association’s former secretary general also said he was grateful for ensuring that sports journalists across the country had another peaceful transfer of power.
He defeated Nation Media Group’s Sam Mpoza and former Uspa vice president Ritah Aliguma having garnered 64 votes of the 116 votes cast on Saturday. Aliguma got 36 votes while Mpoza got 16 votes.
Kanyomozi will replace Sabiti Muwanga whose tumultuous two-term reign came to an end on November 24.
“I also congratulate my fellow executive members Mr Mubarak Kasule, Mr Johnson Were and Mr Francisco Bwambale upon being entrusted with their respective offices. I look forward to working with my executive to move Uspa forward,” Kanyomozi said on Monday.
Kasule beat Agnes Katende to the treasurer’s post, collecting 95 votes to his rival’s 22.
Johnson Were (General Secretary) and Francisco Bwambale (Organising Secretary) were elected unopposed.
“To my friends Aliguma, Mpoza and Katende, thank you for offering yourselves for leadership, that’s a strong show of commitment and willingness to serve USPA. I request you to keep that commitment so we can build our association together,” he added.
Aliguma congratulated Kanyomizi on his victory, saying she hopes he will put the (Uspa) house to order while Mpoza cited ‘money that exchanged hands on the eve of the vote’ as reason why he posted paltry results.
Kanyomozi now has 30 days to name his full executive as per Uspa constitution.
“I promise that I will do so within that time period,” he pledged.
