Poor performance of pupils in government-aided primary schools has been attributed to parents and teachers for failing to play their roles.
According to Dan Mugizi, the coordinator of ARISE, a local NGO in Ntungamo District, parents must play their role of providing lunch and scholastic materials to their children in order to improve the quality of Education in Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools.
Mr Mugizi revealed that some parents have abandoned their sole responsibility to government saying that children should study for free.
He made remarks on Wednesday while closing a three-day Volunteer Uwezo assessment training of 60 volunteers from Ntungamo District held at Belsom/Sky Blue Ntungamo Municipality.
Mr Mugizi noted that children from six-16 years at least 58 per cent of pupils in Primary Two in Ntungamo District cannot perform a two-digit subtraction and cannot read a single word of a short sentence.
He said that the trained will carry out assessment for three days in their areas thereafter report back to the secretariat for data entry about learning systems in schools in Ntungamo district.
The Uwezo annual learning assessment is being implemented in 32 district including Ntungamo.
The programmes officer, Mr David Mugurutsi noted that Uwezo is a Swahili word meaning capability. It’s an East African initiative, assessing and promoting learning outcomes for Primary school going children between ages 6-16.
