The Echuya forest, which covers the districts of Rubanda and Kisoro is likely to be gazetted into a national park in a move to enhance tourism in the area.
This was revealed by Adrine Tibenda, a woman councilor at Rubanda district.
“I asked Rubanda district Council to allow Echuya forest to be gazetted to a National park. It would be a great deal for tourism ” Tibenda said.
Echuya forest which stretches the sub counties of Bufundi and Muko is famous for being a home of the marginalized Batwa communities before 1990 when they were evacuated from there.
A district with a tourism potential?
Rubanda district was curved out of Kabale district in mid 2016 – and it went with most of the tourism potentials that Kabale district had.
The District (Rubanda) shares a very big portion of Lake Bunyonyi, has Echuya forest, bwindi national park – and has an ideal climate from where the name ‘Rubanda’ came from, which literally means mist.
The District has people that are very hospitable. And still to note is that Rubanda district has for years been a source of food to the Kigezi region, mostly for the growing of Irish potatoes, beans and sweet potatoes.
