The National Water and Sewerage Corporation Managing Dr.Eng Silver Mugisha has today launched a specialised training class for the NWSC staff that will manage the largest sewage treatment plant in East and Central Africa under construction at Bugolobi Wankoko.
Speaking at the launch of the specialised trainnig class, Dr Silver shared that the new 45million litres per day waste water treatment plant will help clean up Kampala City and the environment by diverting and treating water from the heavily polluted Nakivubo channel before releasing water into the Lake Victoria.
According to Dr. Silver, the plant will generate 630kw of power, a rigorous odour treatment process (the new plant will be nuisance free), reduce the pollution of Lake Victoria and subsequently reduce raw water treatment costs among others.
He added that the project encompasses an ultra-modern sewerage treatment plant in Bugolobi, a sewerage pre-treatment plant in Kinawataka, a sewerage pumping station on Kibira road and 31km of sewer network to serve city dwellers in Naguru, Ntinda, Nakawa, Bugolobi, Kyambogo, Kiwanataka, Banda, Kasokoso, Butabika and neighbouring areas. This substantially extends piped sewerage services outside the Central Business District, Old Kampala, Kiseka Market area, Kololo, Nakasero etc.
According to Dr Silver, training of the sewage services team is timely and is aimed at enhancing the capacity of the NWSC sewerage services team and save the corporation costs hiring experts to train the staff.
“I urge you all to be innovative. The new plant is complex but we believe that our team is ready for the task. The team has been working with the constructors and with resilience, hardwork and team spirit our own people will operate this Hi-tech machinery.” he said
The Director Enginering Services Engineer Alex Gisagara assured the meeting that the team is ready to learn and deliver the project to the people of Uganda.
“We have already recruited some experts in biogas, mechanical engineers, electrical among others.” he said.
The representative of the consultants Harald Kipke from GKW Germany appreciated the corporation’s vision and commitment towards water and sewerage services for all.
NWSC is committed to water for all, for delighted customers by a delighted workforce
