Rubaga Catholic Cathedral was filled by celebrities and friends of jailbird pop star turned politician Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
Celebrities from all walks of life including entertainment, politics, law among others, turned up in big numbers for mass which was led by the Chancellor of Kampala Archdiocese Monsignor John Mary Ssebunya.
The military watched from far as droves of people walked or drove into the cathedral on Wednesday morning.
The family of Bobi Wine had requested for the special mass to prayer for the release of the self proclaimed ghetto president who is being at Makindye military barracks awaiting his appearance before the general court martial from where he is most likely to get bail on Thursday.
Among the famous and powerful that turned up include Opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye, Lord Mayor Erias Lukwaago, MPs Muyanja Ssenyonga (Mukono south), Kato Lubwaama (Lubaga south), Allan Sewanyana (Makindye West), Latif Sebaggala (Kawempe), Babirye Kabanda (Masaka), Mukasa Mbidde (EALA), and Leader of Opposition in parliament Betty Aol Ochan (Gulu) and her predecessor Winnie Kiiza (Kasese).
The others were Buganda Kingdom attorney general David Mpanga, mayors of Rubaga, Kawempe, Kasangati, Kampala central among others.
The Federation of performing Artists Andrew Benon Kibuuka, UMA president Julius Kyazze, and UPRS president Dr Travis Kazibwe, were all in attendance including superstar musicians such as Pastor Wilson Bugembe, Jose Chameleone, among others.
Chancellor Ssebunya read a message from the archbishop of Kampala Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga who called for peace and respect for all in the country. Earlier this website had understood that youthful priest Fr Deogratius Kiibi Kateregga was set to lead this mass, but was at last minute told to step aside given the weight of the occasion.
Only two speeches were allowed to be read in the church, in what is understood to have been a way to restrain church turning into a political platform.
Buganda Kingdom’s katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga sent a message which was read for him by Attorney General David Mpanga, and Bobi Wine’s wife Barbie.
The katikkiro asked for restraint and respect of human rights of everyone. Barbie called upon the government to release his husband to go to hospital for treatment.
