Warring parties in South Sudan have finally signed a peace accord. On Sunday, the men who have been at war signed a peace deal witnessed by heads of state and international observers.
South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir and his former deputy turned rebel leader Riek Machar, agreed to end the war that broke out in December 2013.
The power sharing agreement would see Kiir stay as president and Machar return to Juba as First Vice President. Other vice presidents would come from other warring groups.
Sharing of cabinet positions would follow including 35 ministers and a huge parliament of 550 members.
The parties have already agreed on permanent ceasefire and withdrawing of their forces from civilian areas.
The peace deal was witnessed by among others Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, Sudan’s Omar Bashir, Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta, Djibouti’s Ismail Omar Guelleh among others.
