Post Bank Uganda Ltd joined the rest of the world to celebrate world refugee day under the theme: “Now more than ever, we need to stand #With Refugees”.
The main celebrations took place in Nakivale refugee settlement in Isingiro district on Wednesday, June 20th 2018. The highlight of the day was the World refugee 5K run sponsored by PostBank, ARC and United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
The guest of honour was the state minister for disaster preparedness, Musa Ecweru. Over 1,000 refugees turned up for the marathon that took place at the base camp Nakivale.
Uganda has gained international recognition for hosting thousands of refugees coming especially from neighbouring countries including South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Eritrea, among others.
“We are happy to be associated with refugees as the preferred payment social payment service provider. We appreciate the development partners and the government of Uganda for the social aid support,” said Jackie Kwesiga PBU’s senior manager marketing and communications.
Nakivale Refugee Settlement opened 60 years ago, and the World Refuge Day was commemorated there as part of the efforts to recognize the settlement which has been home to thousands of refugees all these years.
There are over 68 million people worldwide displaced from their homes, according to the UNHCR.
UNHCR country representative Boutroue Joel called upon all international development partners responsible for ensuring the safety and well being of refugees to increase on the funding which is becoming a big challenge to their developmental goals.
