Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development Permanent Secretary Pius Bigirimana was on Thursday morning kicked off Umeme Board of Directors by the power distribution company shareholders.
During the Umeme annual general meeting that took place at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, Bigirimana was among the five nominated people on board but trouble arose when shareholders were asked to endorse his appointment through vote.
During voting, members enormously rejected Bigirimana’s appointment and he was the only one who was kicked off the board out of the five.
According to Nilepost, Board chairman Patrick Bitature reigned in on the matter when he clarified that despite the share holder’s rejection, Bigirimana has been seconded by the NSSF which is the major shareholder, but his pleas fell on deaf ears.
By the end of the day, Bitature bowed to the members’ pressure thus saying, “On behalf of the company and in the interest of everyone, we shall not appoint Mr Bigirimana but he is free to stand again.”
