After MPs profusely voted in favour of passing the contentious age limit bill, President Yoweri Museveni has finally sealed off the done deal by signing the bill into a fully fledged law.
Last month, 317 MPs voted for the passing of constitutional amendment (No. 2) bill 2017 which seeks to remove the presidential age limit whereas 97 legislators were against the amendments while two abstained.
Parliament carried out an open vote on the second reading of the contentious constitution amendment bill with the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga presiding over the session. The NRM party used its numerical strength to carry the day.
According to Chimpreports, the signing was confirmed by Parliament’s director of communications Chris Obore.
“Yes, he just signed it. It is now an Act of Parliament.” Said Obore.
With age limit off the hook, President Museveni is free to run for another term in office even after exceeding 75 years of age.
