On Tuesday,President Yoweri Museveni is expected to meet the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee to give his views about the contentious age limit bill.
In September, the committee chaired by West Budama South MP Jacob Oboth-Oboth was last month tasked by Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga to scrutinize the bill and report back to parliament.
Since then, a number of stakeholders including opposition figures, members in government, and civil societies among others have been presenting their mixed views concerning the bill.
The Private Member’s Bill tabled by Igara West Member of Parliament Raphael Magyezi proposes an amendment to Article 102(b) which caps the presidential age limits at 35 years and 75 years as minimum and maximum age for the holder of a presidential office.
Mr. Museveni could become the first direct beneficiary of the proposed amendment, should the upper age cap be removed. Born in 1944, the president is not eligible for re-election in 2021 as he will be above 75 years.
Besides seeking the amendment of Article 102(b), Magyezi also seeks to amend Article 104(6) to increase the number of days within which the electoral commission is required to hold a fresh election where a presidential election is annulled, from twenty days to sixty days from the date of the annulment.
