The Island of Kimi has been destroyed in fires which gutted the area leaving over 600 homes razed.
The Island which has been the major business area of Koome Islands, a sub county of Mukono district in Uganda. According to Mukono district chairperson, Mr. Andrew Ssenyonga, the fires were attributed to the fish smoking activities.
Mr. Senyonga noted that due to the fishing operations by police and the army against illegal fishing in the area, fishermen are believed to have resorted to smoking fish inside their houses. Fishing of young fish is illegal in all Ugandan waters.
The fire spread according to eye witnesses was accelerated by petrol devises in the area like power generators and boat engines. The spread is also believed to have been accelerated by the makeshift building structures in the area. People in the islands construct their houses with timber, polythene and plastic materials.
The Community Gives Support
The community of Mukono municipality has since mounted a campaign to help the people from the over 600 homes in the islands whose property ware all razed in fire. The cause is promoted by a local radio station, Dunamis Radio 103 fm.
The radio Station Manager, Pr. Godfrey Kitondekigya said that the first delivery will be made on Monday 30th, 2017 and this will majorly include clothes, food, beddings, soap and drugs among others. He said that the campaign is carried show the people of Kimi that the community is suffering together with them.
He adds that this is also done to promote the spirit of love among the local community such that people learn to solve their own problems by sowing a seed of love to others.
Collection centres have been established at all major churches in Mukono. Some of them include Mt. Lebanon Cathedral, Power in God Christian Centre, D&J Cosmetics, Soldiers of Christ Christian Centre, Dunamis Radio Station and Mukono District Headquarters.
