The executive director of the Uganda National Roads Authority [UNRA] Allen Kagina has confirmed that corruption being one of the hindrances that the authority was facing is reducing slowly due to the fact that most of the corrupt officials have been chased away from UNRA.
Speaking this, Kagina was addressing the press in the financial report on the status of roads in Uganda at UNRA offices in Nakawa.
Kagina said that up to date, contract implementation is still a big issue. This is due to the fact that there are blockers who act as middle men in pushing the contracts to UNRA. It is on this note that Kagina appealed to the public to avoid middle men in pushing their contracts.
“Middle men can never win you contracts. If I were you, I would pass through the right procedures” added Kagina.
According to Kagina, UNRA expects UGX245B to accomplish the new roads estimated at 460km.These sum up to 7 roads including Kampala Entebbe express highway which is expected to be completed in May 2017, Mbarara bypass, Mukono Kyetume Katosi, Mukono Kayunga, Ishaka, Gulu, and many more.
However, according to Kagina, constructions are going on for Tirinyi, Palisa, and Nakapiripirit. These are expected to be 14 paved roads which cover a distance of 750km.
Charles Kizito, the coordinator of the World Bank project confirmed that World Bank is preparing the second arrangements for the funding of the Ugandan roads. He believes that this shall help to meet the vision 2040 target.
