Standard Gauge Railway(SGR) is set to construct the biggest train station in Uganda along the Malaba Kampala railway.
SGR said that the main station will sit on an approx of 208 acres of land in Tororo.
This was said during the state minister of works Gen. Katumba Wamala’s tour at Malaba Kampala SGR construction sites in Malaba.
Wamala monitored the exercise touring the SGR’s eastern route where he also cleared the false rumors spreading that Kenya railway line is stopping in Kisumu that the president of Kenya himself president Uhuru Kenyatta said that Kenya will not stop at Kisumu and he is collecting money from China to fund the construction.
“Construction timelines were synchronized in such a way that when Kenya is at Malaba , Uganda SGR should be in Kampala, when Uganda is at Mirama hills, Rwanda SGR should be in Kigali and this way, we avoid down time in waiting to connect ,” Wamala said.
Wamala added that synchronization of timelines of construction mitigates financial and economic risks that can arise due to down time in waiting to connect.
He also added that SGR Kenya\Uganda is being developed under the auspices of the Northern Corridor Integration Projects (NCIP)protocol which was signed by Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and South Sudan.
“Under NCIP protocol, we agreed to develop china class 1 railway and our class 1 should connect with Kenya class 1. Classification of railway is defined by role\ nature and number of passenger\ traffic volume, class 1 capacity is more than 20meter metric tonnes,” Wamala added.
