A few weeks back Uganda Communication Commission(UCC) Executive Director Godfrey Mutabazi was at war with the general public over unregistered SIM card deactivation issue. The SIM cards were switched off on Friday last week as directed by UCC and Information Minister Frank Tumwebaze.
But early this week President Yoweri Museveni revised the directive and decided to extend the deadline to August.
Now Mutabazi has turned the guns against telecom companies to switch back the unregistered and unverified SIM cards.
While appearing on NBS’s Morning Breeze show, the UCC boss revealed that the re-activation of SIM cards has delayed because the process of switching on cards is not easy as switching off because it is done in batches which takes a lot of time.
“Switching on SIM cards is not as easy as switching off. We switch on in batches, it takes time,” said Mutabazi.
“We are having a few technicalities. Bringing people back on air is a process. It took like 12hrs and that is a record time. We hope that at the end of 90 days everyone will have registered. 90 days are more than enough,” He added.
Mutabazi however, urged all telecom companies to try their level best to switch back all SIM cards within the shortest period possible.
