Uganda communications commission (UCC) executive director Eng. Godfrey Mutabazi has directed all telecom companies this morning to reconnect all de- registered SIM cards which were switched off on Friday 19th May last week.
Mutabazi said that they are following a directive which had come from the president of Uganda HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni that the deadline should be extended until the end of August.
“We have ordered all telecom companies to re-connect the de-registered SIM cards as soon as possible and we expect in a couple of hours all SIM cards will be activated,” Mutabazi said.
He added that the president had also reiterated that this would be the final extension and all relevant bodies involved in the registration of SIM cards, issuing national IDs and the validation of SIM cards against holders IDs should endeavour to complete the tasks in the time given.
The directive has come two days after the President said he agreed with the decision of the NRM Parliamentary caucus that the deadline for SIM card registration should be extended beyond May 19th.
