President Yoweri Museveni has extended the SIM card verification exercise to August 30, 2017.
On Friday midnight last week, all unregistered and unverified SIM cards were switched off by respective telecom companies following orders from Information Minister Frank Tumwebaze.
Parliament tried to pass a motion to extend the switch off exercise to one year but the order was stayed by the minister.
Now after Monday’s caucus with NRM MPs,President Museveni has agreed to extend the switch off exercise.
“President Yoweri Museveni agrees to extend SIM card registration exercise to August 30, 2017 after caucus with NRM MPs,” Uganda Media Centre tweeted.
The new development means all the switched SIM cards are supposed to be switched on again by the service providers.
