The minister of Information Technology and Communication Frank Tumwebaze has confirmed that the deadline of 19th May 2017 which was set by government for all people in Uganda to register their SIM cards still stands.
While addressing journalists at Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, Tumwebaze said all unregistered SIM cards will be switched off by midnight.
“The deadline of 19th May set by Government of Uganda shall still stand” said Tumwebaze, adding that “Unregistered SIM cards will be “switched off by midnight,”
The minister however assured Ugandans who have not yet registered that their unregistered and unverified SIM cards will have access to mobile money services.
“Mobile money services shall still stand for unregistered and unverified SIM cards”
Yesterday, Members of Parliament had proposed a one year extension for the registration process but government declined the proposal.
