The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has insisted that SIM card registration deadline should be today.
Yesterday during parliament plenary hearing, MPs called for a one extension of deadline for the process citing that the current deadline did not favour Ugandans.
Members unanimously agreed to have the deadline extended in a motion that was tabled by the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), Winnie Kizza seconded by the Shadow Attorney General, Wilfred Niwagaba, Manjiya County MP, John Baptist Nambeshe and Mukono County South legislator, Johnson Muyanja Ssenyonga.
However, in response UCC told parliament that the deadline is still on and unverified SIM cards will be switched off.
In addition to that, the minister of Information Technology and communications, Frank Tumwebaze also insisted that the deadline still stands.
According to a directive by Government through the Prime Minister, all unregistered SIM cards by the use of the National Identity Card are to be deactivated by May 19, 2017.
