Uganda – The Kisoro district chairman, Abel Bizimana, has ignited a social media campaign in Kigezi calling for the release of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, who has been detained for nearly three months.
Kisoro District Chairman Ab took to Twitter/X, signaling political tensions in the southwestern Kigezi region, where Mr Besigye comes from, particularly in the wake of President Yoweri Museveni’s recent visit to monitor the implementation of the government’s flagship Parish Development Model (PDM) program.
Bizimana’s post, stating that “Blood is thicker than PDM,” underscored the sentiment that Kigezi regional solidarity surpasses government development initiatives, emphasizing Besigye’s status as a native of Kigezi.
His remarks suggest that Museveni’s visit to the region did little to assuage concerns over Besigye’s prolonged detention, which has sparked growing unease among supporters and political observers alike.
Concerns over Besigye’s health have escalated, with unconfirmed reports suggesting his condition is deteriorating while in custody.
Activists in Besigye’s hometown of Rukungiri recently staged protests demanding his release, reflecting a mounting sense of frustration over his continued incarceration.
Bizimana further fueled the discourse by posting a cryptic message on his social media handle, stating: “The Intelligence thermometer either was faulty or concealed the fact that even if Besigye Kizza can be dirty, his relatives cannot join you to sacrifice him on the political altar. Even when people smiled at the president, they were not happy. Blood is thicker than PDM!”
Dr. Kizza Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and a prominent opposition figure, has long been a thorn in the side of Museveni’s administration.
His arrests and repeated detentions have often been a focal point of Uganda’s political landscape, drawing both domestic and international scrutiny.
