Last week, Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) passed a directive for all people in Uganda to verify their SIM cards within seven days.

The passed order required Ugandans to verify or register their SIM cards using their National identity cards whereas foreigners to use their passports.

Rather than going to service centres, telecom companies came up with an alternative mean of registering from where ever someone may be using his or her phone.

The whole process required someone to just dial *197# and follow prompts.

But earlier today SIM card registration process crashed Airtel system and subscribers had nothing to do apart from being stranded.

However, the telecom company ought to find another alternative and apparently every Airtel user can verify or re-register by sending an SMS to 197.

“Whoever is an AIRTEL SUBSCRIBER, note that *197#  system has issues, therefore use SMS method .How? Write a message on your phone, for example, CM78016102Q64H, KISEMBO, RICHARD send message to 197. You will get confirmation from Airtel. Please forward this message to friends to avoid disconnection. Thanks,”
