The Rubanda District LC.5 Chairman Ampeire Stephen Kasyaba has asked the Government to consider special funding for Districts with rugged terrain.
Kasyaba made the appeal yesterday during a Mobilization Baraza organized by the RDC Secretariat and Office of the President at Rubanda District Meeting Hall.
He argued that it was unfair for the Government to allocate the same amount of money for road construction and maintenance to all Districts without considering the different challenges faced, especially geographical set up.
“The cost of road maintenance in Buganda or Lango cannot be the same in Kigezi because we have hills. Soon all the roads we have worked on will be damaged (by rain and floods),” Kasyaba said.
He said that the Government should also consider the population density in the Districts.
“For example, the population in Kigezi has doubled in the last ten years. This too has an effect on road use and road management,” Kasyaba said.
Major Martha Asiimwe, Head of the RDC Secretariat said that her team was traversing the country on a mission to monitor implementation of the NRM Manifesto 2021-2024. She said that they were majorly interested in service delivery, performance of poverty alleviation programs and the challenges faced needing attention of the State House.
The team that also includes Commissioner Fred Bamwine(RDC in-charge of Karamoja Sub-region), commissioner in charge of Karamoja affairs, have held barazas in Kisoro, and Kanungu District. today they are expected to meet other Key District officials from Kabale and later Rukiga District.
According to Maj. Asiimwe, the plan is also to equip RDCs, their Deputies and Assistant RDCs with key information about Government programs being implemented in their respective Districts so that they could do proper monitoring and sensitization.
“After all this, we expect the RDC to take the messages down to the people and work with everyone to monitor these programs for social-economic transformation in the communities.”
