The Government officially closed the Kiteezi landfill in Wakiso District and handed it over to a Ghanaian investor for development on monday, 8th/10/2024. The landfill, which had been used for garbage disposal, will now be transformed into a site for recycling plastic and turning garbage into organic manure.
This change comes two months after a tragic accident at the landfill in August, where 23 people lost their lives and property was destroyed. The handover ceremony was led by the Minister of State for Kampala Kabuye Kyofatogabye, who stated that the decision was part of a cabinet resolution to make better use of the waste.
Dr. Joseph Agyepong, founder of Joshing Group of Companies, was given control of the site. His company will manage the garbage, which is expected to create over 2,000 jobs for Ugandans.
Meanwhile, survivors of the accident were given ugx 2million each to help them find temporary housing. The government is also planning to compensate landlords who lost their homes in the disaster, though the timeline for this is still uncertain.
