Dr. Kizza Besigye, a former military officer and a prominent political figure in Uganda, has shared his thoughts on the recent posts on X (Twitter) by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Commander of Defence Forces (CDF) and son of President Yoweri Museveni. A series of Muhoozi’s tweets have sparked controversy, especially his warning to the American ambassador to Uganda,H.E William Popp to apologize to his father, President Museveni or leave the country by Monday, for what he termed as “disrespect” to the president.
In his remarks, Dr. Besigye stated, “I can’t fault Gen. Muhoozi for what he is doing. I fault the people of Uganda who have allowed a situation of 40 years to develop and mature to this state. We are the problem.” He believes that Muhoozi’s actions reflect a mindset shaped by the power and influence of his father, who has ruled Uganda for over three decades.
Dr. Besigye noted that Muhoozi’s worldview is based on what he sees as unchallenged and unrestricted power. He argues that this perspective informs how Muhoozi reacts to both local and international issues. “When he says all that, he thinks he is speaking on behalf of Ugandans,” Dr. Besigye added.
The comments come at a time when many Ugandans are concerned about the increasing tensions between the government and foreign diplomats, as well as the broader implications for Uganda’s political climate. As discussions around power dynamics and leadership continue, Dr. Besigye’s insights shed light on the complex relationship between authority and public sentiment in Uganda.
