Kasambya Member of Parliament, Hon. David Kabanda, has spoken out against recent sanctions imposed on Ugandan dignitaries by Western countries, including the USA. The sanctions come in the wake of allegations of human rights abuses and torture by high-ranking Ugandan police officers, with a particular focus on the mistreatment of opposition leaders like Hon. Francis Zaake.
Hon. Kabanda expressed his belief that these sanctions are part of a larger plan orchestrated by Uganda’s opposition led by Bobi Wine, in collaboration with what he referred to as “enemies of Uganda and Africa.” According to Kabanda, the opposition is using these international measures to weaken the country’s security forces and destabilize the nation, especially with the 2026 elections approaching.
He stated, “The opposition groups want to use the enemies of Uganda & Africa to prepare violence during & after elections. All these sanctions against our able security officers are a tool by our enemies to scare the security forces from combating crime. Violence has no space on our soil.”
Kabanda’s remarks suggest that he views the sanctions as an attempt to undermine Uganda’s security operations, which he argues are crucial for maintaining peace and order in the country. He emphasized the importance of security forces in preventing any form of violence during and after the upcoming elections.
The recent sanctions, imposed by the US State Department, are linked to accusations of torture and human rights abuses, particularly involving opposition members. Despite these allegations, Kabanda insists that the sanctions are politically motivated and aimed at discouraging Uganda’s security officers from fulfilling their duties.
As Uganda prepares for the 2026 elections, the issue of sanctions and their impact on the political environment is likely to remain a contentious topic.
