Police have dismissed claims that a woman found dead along the Northern Bypass was attacked while jogging, following preliminary investigations. Over the weekend, the body of the unidentified woman sparked social media discussions, with many suggesting she was attacked during an early morning jog.
However, on Monday, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke revealed that the deceased has been identified as Agnes Nantongo, a manager at African Oil Petrol Station in Bweyogerere and a resident of Matugga, Wakiso district. Rusoke noted that Nantongo was wearing the same clothes she had on at work the previous day, casting doubt on the claim that she was jogging. He suggested that she may have been killed elsewhere, with her body later dumped along the bypass. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible.
Concerns have been raised by the public about the safety of the Northern Bypass, citing multiple incidents of attacks. Addressing the issue, Rusoke acknowledged the challenges posed by the evolving methods of criminals, who now use bare knuckles rather than weapons. He explained that these criminals can easily evade police patrols, only to strike moments later by punching victims to death. He described this as a significant challenge for law enforcement in combating current crime trends.
Despite these difficulties, Rusoke emphasized that police operations targeting criminals on the Northern Bypass are ongoing. Many suspects have been arrested, charged, and imprisoned, though some return to crime after serving their sentences.
