Although surrounded by water, Buvuma’s safe water coverage is still below average as it stands at 35%. This is attributes to the meagre resources received over time under the water development hindering the establishment of water supply systems with the seemingly costly technology available.
Over the last ten years, only two major water supply systems have been established in Buvuma Town Council, and Bugaya Sub County- these are managed by the Umbrella of Water and Sanitation, in addition to the Kekejje gravity flow water supply system in Nairambi sub county which has served for over 20 years. The systems only serve parts of the mentioned Lower Local Governments.
The Government of Uganda through Ministry of Water and Environment is set to establish four solar Powered water Supply systems in 15 villages in four sub counties in Buvuma District under a project named “SUPPLY OF SOLAR POWERED WATER PUMPING SYSTEMS IN RURAL SUB COUNTIES WITH SAFE WATER COVERAGE OF LESS THAN 50%”.
The four systems will cost government $1,780,000. equivalent to Ushs 6,626,400,809, secured from Exim Bank of India.
Construction arrangements are expected to commence immediately as the contractor (M/S Shakti Pump India Ltd) has been introduced to the District leaders and stakeholders. Beneficiary Communities will be able to access safe water by June 2025.
Zzinga village in Zzinga parish, Bugaya Sub County, Lubya, Kiganda, Kisekka and Lutuntu Villages in Lubya parish, Lubya Town Council will benefit. Other areas include: Nkata village in Nkata parish, Lyabaana Town Council, Lwazi, Makopa, Ddembe, Kiwololo and Mpango villages in Ddembe parish, Lwaje sub county.
Also; Kaserere, Banka, Kalungi and Sule villages in Kaserere parish, Lwaje sub county.
