Uganda Prisons Spokesperson Frank Baine has said that prisons don’t need a court order to do a medical checkup on Makerere University research fellow Dr. Stella Nyanzi since it is mandatory to every prisoner to undergo such process.
This comes at a time when Stella Nyanzi’s lawyers earlier today protested Dr. Nyanzi’s medical checkup in Luzira Prison.
“We don’t need a court order to do medical checkups. Medical examination is a must during admission,” Baine stated.
While appearing before on NBS TV, the prisons mouth piece said Nyanzi was presented for a medical examination and they shall keep her until she goes back to court adding that the if the embattled academia had a psychiatric problem, she wouldn’t be in Luzira.
“If the doctors had found a psychiatric problem, she wouldn’t be here. We would have informed court,” He asserted.
“Stella Nyanzi is okay and calm. We didn’t subject her to medical checkups but it’s a requirement during admission. There must be a medical checkup to confirm whether the person has any health issues. We’re not supposed to keep people with contagious diseases and you can’t ascertain their condition without a medical checkup,” Baine added.
He further revealed that Dr. Nyanzi is not the first person to undergo medical examination; doctors checked Dr Kizza Besigye and Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere.
