Mbarara City Police have arrested five suspects in connection with the vandalism of street lights and national water equipment, Rwizi Police Spokesperson SP Kasasira Samson has confirmed.
The suspects, who include Ahereza Price, 19, Rwamirama Inton, 20, Ndyamuhaki Amon, 17, Kwikiriza Swamadu, 47, a businessman, and Bainomugisha Edson, 33, a scrap store keeper, were apprehended on July 31, 2024, in a joint operation with local leaders from Kiyanja and Mandela cells.
According to SP Kasasira, the suspects are believed to be part of a larger syndicate responsible for the theft and destruction of public property.
“We have recovered a substantial amount of stolen items, including 14 solar batteries, a solar charger controller, 13 water meters, 34 taps/joints, electric cables, electric meters, and breaking implements,” he said.
The police are still searching for Ukasha Tonny and Nuwasiima Johnbosco, the owners of the scrap stores believed to be involved in the vandalism.
“We are working closely with Mbarara City Council, National Water, and UMEME to identify the recovered items and continue investigating the matter,” SP Kasasira added.
This crackdown comes as a relief to the residents of Mbarara City, who have been plagued by the vandalism of essential public infrastructure. The police have assured the public that they will continue to work tirelessly to bring all culprits to book.
