In a touching call for action, the Buganda Kingdom Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has urged leaders of the National Unity Platform to embrace constructive dialogue and mutual respect, highlighting the significance of harmonious interactions for societal cohesion and progress.

Speaking to NUP leaders led by Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi at Bulange Mengo on Wednesday to support the Kabaka’s birthday run campaign, Mayiga stressed how critical it is that opposition leaders use this opportunity to demonstrate the finest standards of problem-solving. He emphasized that before Ugandans think about giving opposition leaders leadership positions in the country, it is imperative that they demonstrate their capacity for handling difficulties.

Katikkiro highlighted in his speech the harm that disrespect and self-abuse do to civil discourse and social cohesion. He warned against the dangers of aggressive conversations and divisive speech, which not only damage leaders’ reputations but also weaken public confidence in opposition. Katikiro Mayiga emphasized the need of creating an atmosphere that encourages meaningful conversation and cooperation, which is crucial for tackling urgent societal issues, by arguing for a culture of polite communication.

“You must learn to be patient with each other! You must also learn to respect each other now while you still in the opposition because if you don’t the moment you will be in power you will be a monstrous dictator,” he warned.

For the sake of the party and Ugandans, he also reminded them that mistakes are made by humans, which is why those who make mistakes are not executed. He also asked them to refrain from expressing their disagreements in public.“If you get used to abusing each other, the next thing is fighting against each other and this will be your end! Let’s love each other and we shall reach our goals..”

Mayiga’s call for harmony in the country’s current strongest political party follows a number of incidents that have taken place in the party where there are a lot of verbal exchanges between some members of the party and the top leadership.

For over a month, the party has been in crisis and nothing has been put in place to ensure mutual understanding of the dissenting side however the hostility and abuses on social media towards the dissenter is increasing day by day.

Therefore Katikkiro’s message resonates as a timely reminder of the values of tolerance and understanding in the political arena. In a climate marked by polarization and ideological strife, his call for introspection and restraint also serves as a beacon of hope for fostering unity and inclusivity.
