Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has directed that sim-cards will only be sold at telecom service centres until new places are gazetted.
In line with this new directive, Police has warned that any persons found selling sim cards illegally will be arrested.
The new directive was arrived at after a meeting between UCC and stakeholders who include police, telecom companies and National Identification Registration Authority among others.
According to UCC Executive Director Godfrey Mutabazi, all companies will be expected to update their clients data for the purpose of weeding out those forged registration documents.
“We have held a meeting with both police and telecom operators and agreed that there will be no more street vending of simcards. Simcards are to be sold only in gazetted custom service centres,” Mutabazi said.
“Refugees in Uganda who need to own simcards will require approval and an official document from the Office of the Prime Minister before they can access a simcard,” He added.
