Makindye East Member of Parliament Derrick Nyeko has vowed to push for efforts to cut down on the number of Members of Parliament.
Nyeko’s move comes at time when there is a section of Members of Parliament mooting a plan to introduce a Bill that seeks to downsize the Ugandan Parliament by almost half to improve governance.
Last week ,Rushenyi county Member of Parliament Naome Kabasharira resolved to table a private members Bill, that will apply as the brakes on the ever-swelling parliament that is a huge cost to taxpayers.
MPs’ move would see the number of legislators fall from the current 529 to 292 MPs representing 146 districts.
However ,Nyeko said that the number of ministers and Members of Parliament need to be downsized to minimize the unnecessary borrowing to sustain their payments.
He added that the number of Members of Parliament should be cut since even fellow legislators do not know each other and they cannot effectively and conclusively debate on the issues affecting the people since their time to debate is limited to three minutes.
