The Vice Chancellor of Victoria University, Dr. Lawrence Muganga has scooped the Best Innovative Educator Award.
Dr Muganga was honored during the World Press Freedom Day on Tuesday 3rd May, 2022 at an event organized by Uganda Journalists Association (UJA).
The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day, observed to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The day also marks the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in Windhoek in 1991.
UJA lauded the VC for his enormous contribution towards Uganda’s education sector.
After receiving the accolade, Dr Muganga lauded UJA for recognizing his efforts towards the development of the country’s education sector.
“…. Sending my heartfelt appreciation to Uganda Journalists Association for honoring me with the Award of Best Innovative Educator. On this World Press Freedom Day, I appreciate the work done by Uganda’s media,” he said.
Dr Muganga further noted that in Uganda, they need to deeply reflect on the new digital era, which now defines the new media.
“This implies that there are more players in the media; journalists and non-journalists, which raises an issue of the quality of journalism, professionalism of journalists and how this may affect the democratic process of the country; an issue I will raise in my address, this evening,” the VC stated.
“We all, appreciate the role of journalists in helping and supporting the growth of democracies, and it is rightly called the fourth Pillar of democracy; the Fourth Estate; the others being the legislature, executive, and judiciary. To accomplish its mandate, the media is expected to disseminate political information, to be used by voters in making informed decisions. The media also helps identify the problems in our society and serves as a medium for deliberation. It (Media) is also expected to serve as watchdogs that we rely on for uncovering mistakes and wrongdoings by those who have power.”
