The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi Tumusiime has directed the Police to enforce the noise pollution law. He notes that there is heavy noise pollution in the city day and night, which needs to be regulated.
Addressing journalists on Friday, Tumusiime noted that although there are laws regulating noise, the major enforcement agencies like the National Environment Management Authority-NEMA have left the work to the Environmental Police Unit, which doesn’t have the capacity to handle the situation alone.
He noted with concern the increasing numbers of bars, Churches, construction sites and places of social gatherings, which emit lots of noise to the detriment of the community members. Tumusiime urged the general public to work with the police to enforce the law and directed Division Police Commanders (DPCs) and Regional Police Commanders (RPCs) in different regions to ensure that the noise pollution law is enforced,
Robert Kalumba, the deputy spokesperson of Kampala Capital City Authority, said that KCCA is going to engage the stakeholders like churches and the bar owners to come up with a plan on how to address the problem.
