The repair works on Kazinga Channel Bridge at Katunguru are complete. Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA closed the bridge that connects Kasese-Katunguru-Ishaka road in June last year to pave way for emergency rehabilitation works.
During this period, UNRA provided a ferry for light vehicles and humans and diverted the rest of the traffic to other routes. The Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA spokesperson, Allan Sempebwa, says the bridge is now fully open for traffic.
He revealed that UNRA provided additional manpower to complete the work much earlier than the estimated period at the end of April.
Moses Illa, a taxi stout says the completion of the bridge is a huge relief to the transport business. He said the constant breakdown of the ferry services has affected their operations for the last ten months.
The Kazinga Channel links lake Edward and George and is a dominant feature of Queen Elizabeth National Park, which attracts several tourists. The bridge is a route for several motorists including taxis, buses and heavy trucks.
