A boda boda cyclist in Nyansozi village Kabarole district has been shot dead by a security officer at a checkpoint in Kibeede Trading Centre as he tried to flout the inter district travel ban order.
According to NBS TV, the shooting by the alleged UPDF soldier occurred on Monday at the border of Kabarole and Bunyangabu districts, where the presidential guidelines against inter-district travels were being enforced.
On June 6th, President Yoweri Museveni ordered the closure of schools and the suspension of non-essential travel between districts in an attempt to stem out a worrying trend in the rise in Covid-19 cases in Uganda.
He imposed a 42 day suspension on all inter-district public transport effective 11th June, except for Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso districts as one of the measures to curb the pandemic.
According to the security plan, police have already mobilised more than 500 armed and non-armed personnel per district to carry out the enforcement of the guidelines.
“The traffic commanders of every district have data on public transport vehicles operating in their jurisdiction. They know the traffic flow on each road. With such data, we can’t fail to execute the guidelines,” Uganda Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga a few days ago.
