Former Makerere University Researcher cum political activist Dr Stella Nyanzi has once again been nominated for a global award over her human rights based writing.
Nyanzi, who scooped a similar award in 2019 while in prison has had her recent poem titled ” My public invitation ” chosen for the first ever Artfluence Human Rights Festival organised by the Centre for Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.
“Tomorrow, my new poem entitled “My Public Invitation” will be among the acts of the Official Opening of this four-day event running from 5th to 8th May 202, ” Nyanzi wrote on Facebook in excitement.
Her other pieces will feature in subsequent sessions of the festival.
The former academician emphasised the role of arts in the fight against human rights abuse world over. She is humbled by the fact that whereas she is ridiculed, persecuted and imprisoned by her government for her writing, other countries appreciate and celebrate her efforts.
“While my own home-country hates, mocks, pathologises, and imprisons me for my poems that expose tyranny, other countries celebrate my radical poetry,” Nyanzi said.
