An inmate in Rubanda prison, Rubanda district has tested positive for Covid-19.
The inmate, whose identity has been withheld, was among the 14 inmates who were transferred to Rubanda Prison from Kisoro district last Saturday.
The Rubanda district Health Officer Dr Abdon Birungi said that upon receiving information that one of the prisoners was detained at Kisoro police station where a Covid-19 patient was reported last week, they decided to carry out testing for all 14 prisoners who were transferred from Kisoro and one of them on Thursday tested positive.
Dr Birungi said that the whole prison has been turned into an isolation center for all inmates. He added that the patient has been admitted at Kabale regional referral hospital for further management.
Dr Birungi noted that both the patient and other inmates in the prison will not be allowed to move for the next two weeks and their samples will be drawn for testing.
The Uganda Prisons Spokesperson Frank Baine told our reporter on the phone that he has not received information about the issue. He however added that prison management will handle the issue in the same way Covid-19 is being handled country wide saying that Covid-19 in Uganda is no longer a cause for an alarm.
